Our Experience
As a complement to our Business Growth and Tax Planning, Business and Civil Litigation and Estate Planning and Probate Practice Areas, Minor & Brown’s Federal and State Tax Controversy Group represents individuals, businesses and estates in tax controversies against the Internal Revenue Service and the Colorado Department of Revenue. Through our experience, we recognize that the best way to avoid tax litigation and to prevent a controversy from developing is to involve knowledgeable counsel early on. Further, to ensure a comprehensive approach to a tax dispute, our attorneys routinely collaborate with client’s accountant, in-house counsel and financial advisor.
Decisions made at the planning stage of a transaction or estate plan and the early stages of an audit are critical to shaping the ultimate result, as is knowing whether or when to settle an issue or a case. In such circumstances, we develop audit strategies, prepare protests, assist in any negotiations to the extent appropriate, and give you the best chance of avoiding protracted litigation.
In the event a tax controversy develops into litigation, we represent taxpayers in civil tax controversies at all administrative levels. If a tax dispute cannot be resolved at these administrative levels, we will litigate the dispute before the U.S. Tax Court, U.S. District Courts, U.S. Claims Court, U.S. Courts of Appeal and all Colorado state and probate courts.
Significantly, we possess a substantive knowledge of tax law and a detailed understanding of the procedural issues involved in tax disputes. This combination of substantive and procedural knowledge enables us to develop creative strategies for resolving sophisticated tax problems.
